A Piece Of The Pie
August 8, 2025
Typically, when we sit down for potluck meals, Thanksgiving dinner, or even a meal at someone’s home, pie is a common dessert. There may be a pie that gets passed around or one sitting on the dessert table. And if we want some, we cut out a piece for ourselves.
Well, metaphorically speaking, imagine that each slice of the pie represents a different area of your life. If the pie has eight slices, one piece might represent your family life, another a hobby, one your work life, another your friendships. Then there’s your health, your finances, your marriage — and perhaps one slice represents your Christianity or spiritual life.
Sometimes this is the way people view their life — like a pie divided into slices. Each slice represents a different area: work, family, hobbies, finances, relationships. And unfortunately, for some, Christianity becomes just one of those slices. It’s treated no differently than the others — just another piece of life, cut out and compartmentalized. And sometimes all the other slices get “eaten,” so to speak, before the Christianity slice is ever touched… if it gets touched at all.
I think most of us can understand that this is not how Christianity should be treated. It cannot just be a part of your life that you have sectioned off from everything else. It can’t just be something you “consume” or participate in some of the time. Always remember that Christianity cannot just be another piece of the pie in your life–it has to be your life. – D.
