Ripening Fruit

August 18, 2025

Here’s a fun fact: some fruits, like bananas and avocados, release a natural gas called ethylene. There are also other fruits that are sensitive to this gas, and when you place those fruits or vegetables beside bananas or avocados, the gas will actually help speed up the ripening process. Now, if you leave them together too long, they will also mold much quicker—but there’s an obvious spiritual thought here to go along with this.

When I talk to new Christians, or when I continue to study with them after their baptism, I always try to encourage them to spend time with strong Christians. Additionally, I try to encourage more seasoned Christians to bring along the “babes” in Christ—take them to lunch, invite them into your home for dinner, or include them in small gatherings. It really can make a difference in the growth of a new Christian. Or, to go along with the fruit analogy, it can help “ripen” them.

When Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals,’” the opposite is also true—if you surround yourself with good company, they can help strengthen your morals. There are two thoughts here to consider:

1.         If you’re a new Christian, try to be the fruit or vegetable that sits beside the banana or avocado. Put yourself around other “good fruit” that can help ripen you in your new walk faster.

2.         If you’re a seasoned Christian, don’t forget how critical it is for someone who has just put on Christ to be surrounded by those who can strengthen and grow them. In other words, if you’re a mature Christian—be a banana that helps ripen other fruit.
